Warm or bright? Light color and brightness, explained

Lumens for brightness, kelvin for color.

Two numbers describe a lamp's light. Lumens measure how bright it is: a standard 60 watt equivalent bulb gives about 800. Kelvin (K) measures its color: 2700K is warm and cozy, 3000K is a slightly crisper warm white, and 5000K and above is cool daylight for task areas. Almost every Brightech lamp is 2700K or 3000K, the warm range most people prefer at home. Here is what each number looks like, how much light a room needs, and how to choose between a built-in LED and a bulb you can change.

2700K: the warm, amber glow

2700K has the amber glow of a traditional incandescent bulb. It flatters skin tones and wood, and it is the color to choose for bedrooms and for living rooms in the evening, when you want a room to feel calm. Many Brightech table and desk lamps are 2700K: the Addison, Mila Tall, Krystal and Kai all glow at 2700K, as do the Linden and Elizabeth floor lamps.

3000K: still warm, a little crisper

3000K is still a warm white, but whiter and crisper than 2700K, so colors and print read more clearly. It suits reading corners, kitchens and home offices, and it is what the large majority of Brightech floor lamps use, including the Sky, Mason, Leaf and Eden. Side by side you would notice the difference. In separate rooms, both read as warm, so you can mix them across a home without it feeling patchy.

How many lumens do you need?

Lumens are the honest measure of brightness, because LEDs make watts misleading. As a rough guide: 400 to 800 lumens for a table lamp beside a bed or chair, about 800 for a floor lamp lighting part of a room, and 1,500 or more to light a whole room that has no ceiling fixture. Uplights (torchieres) feel brighter than their number because they bounce light off the ceiling and spread it evenly. Brightech's brightest best sellers are the Sky at 2,190 lumens and the Linden at 2,159, followed by the Nola at 1,800 and the Eden at 1,600.

Want to change the color?

A few Brightech lamps let you pick the color yourself. The Montage Modern Floor Lamp comes with a bulb that has five color settings: warm white, soft white, neutral white, cool white and daylight. It switches on and off and is not dimmable. The Forge floor lamp's bulb also has five settings. For a desk, the Axel table lamp offers three color temperatures, 3000K, 4000K and 5500K, with dimming, so it can go from crisp work light to a soft evening glow. Any Brightech lamp with a standard socket, like the Olivia, Logan or Swoop, can also take a color-changing smart bulb of your choice.

Built-in LED or replaceable bulb?

A built-in (integrated) LED has nothing to buy or change, and because there is no socket the lamp can be slimmer, like the thin head of a torchiere or the blade of a swing-arm reading lamp. Brightech rates its built-in LEDs at around 20,000 hours, which is over 13 years at four hours a day, and covers them with a 5 year warranty when you buy directly from brightech.com. A lamp with a standard socket gives you choice instead: swap in a brighter bulb, a warmer one, or a smart bulb whenever you like, and keep the lamp for as long as you like the look of it.

How to light a room well

  1. Keep one color per room. Mixing 2700K and 5000K in the same room makes both look wrong.
  2. Layer three lamps, not one bright one. A floor lamp for overall light, a reading lamp where you sit, a table lamp for glow.
  3. Go warmer as the day ends. 2700K in the bedroom, 3000K where you read and work.
  4. Use an uplight in a room with no ceiling light. Bounced light fills a room more evenly than a bright shade.
  5. Save daylight (5000K) for tasks, like a desk, a craft table or a garage, not for relaxing.
