The Swoop is all metal, frame and shade alike, on a 10 inch round base. The metal shade keeps the light directed rather than glowing through the sides, and because the shade pivots, you can aim it straight down or angle it forward toward a chair or a wall.
Yes, the shade is adjustable. It pivots, so the Swoop can light straight down, angle forward toward a chair, or turn toward a wall, and its curved arm carries the light out past the base instead of down onto it. It turns on and off with a foot switch on the cord. On the Cream version the inside of the shade is gold, which warms the light it throws; the Black version's shade does not have the gold interior.
Not from the lamp, which is on/off at the foot switch. It takes a standard A19 E26 bulb, so fitting a dimmable smart bulb adds dimming, scheduling, and voice control.
Yes. The Swoop's head pivots, and the asymmetric arm carries it out past the base, so the light lands beside the lamp rather than straight down on it. That combination makes it a genuine reading lamp rather than just a room light.
It uses a 9.5 watt LED, and unlike the integrated lamps in the range it is fully replaceable: a standard A19 bulb with an E26 base, available anywhere. Swapping in a brighter or warmer bulb is straightforward.

No, the Swoop is not oversized. It ships in a 16.75 by 12.75 by 7.5 inch carton at 10.5 lbs, because the pole packs in sections. One person can carry it in from the doorstep and it fits in a car back seat.
Assembly is required with no separate hardware pack: the pole sections thread together and seat into the weighted base, then the head attaches. Expect a few minutes and no tools.
The Swoop points its light at one spot, so it works best with a second source of general light in the same room rather than alone. The Sky Floor Lamp is the usual pairing: Sky washes the ceiling for ambient light while the Swoop points at whatever you are doing.
